New Scent in the Works for Trunk Show at Tigerlily Perfumery, Saturday July 8th in San Francisco

John Biebel

I'm excited to announce two happenings: First, I'll be doing a trunk show at Tigerlily Perfumery in San Francisco on Saturday, July 8th, along with perfumer Jessica Hannah. This will be my first event with Tigerlily, and it will be a great opportunity to meet folks from that great neighborhood, and to talk with them about the January Scent Project perfumes.

I'm also very happy to be unveiling a perfume that is currently in progress for the event at Tigerlily. It as yet doesn't have a name, and it may not be complete before the event, but I'll still be sharing the progress. I can say a few things about the scent so far. It's a dive into the world of floral scents that I've previously not explored, so it is a new and fascinating territory.

Its primary notes so far are lilac, coconut milk, and turmeric, but it is evolving, so they may shift, but seems to be at the heart of this perfume. Heart is a good word to use since the scent is very heavy in the middle notes - another new innovation for me as I tend to love dwelling in the base.

I'll be sending out more info shortly about the upcoming show at Tigerlily, and I hope to see you there!

There have been some amazing reviews, profiles, and stories about January Scent Project in the past two months, and I wanted to share all these fantastic links. I'm fortunate that the work in perfume has captured the attention and study of writers online, and thereby helping to create more conversations about the perfumes. Please take a visit at these interesting destinations where the perfumes and the process are discussed in detail:

Words With Lucy Raubertas of Indie Perfumes

John Biebel

Last week I spoke for well over an hour with Lucy Raubertas, writer, artisan, perfume expert, and connoisseur of all things cultural. She is also a friend, so this was a great opportunity to catch up. She put together a blog post on the new perfumes that was so insightful, it left me thinking that she'd found more to what I'd been making than I'd even considered myself. As she said so well later about the writing process, "I like to bring something to the table." It's very important to me, as a reader, to see this as well. What does someone else think, feel, interpret?

Her essay about Selperniku, Eiderantler, and Smolderose was so engrossing, vivid, and drew together threads into a kind of Northern mossy tapestry so well suited to the scents. You can read her thoughts here at her blog, Indie Perfumes.

What is particularly nice about this experience is that Lucy is one of the first people to smell the very first version of the very first Smolderose, back in 2015 when I had poked around with alternate versions of the scent for many months. We all agree at that time that it needed work, so it was back to the drawing board, but armed with a lot of important feedback. It's a joy to come full circle with Lucy and hear her thoughts once again.
